Volunteer Employment Information

Thank you for your interest in becoming a member with S.E. Thurston Fire / EMS. As a member, you have an opportunity to join a valuable, community based team assuming a role which meets your available time, skills and interests.

Training and orientation will be provided for all positions at department expense. You will also be provided personal protective equipment required of your position, a department uniform, and a pager.

Obviously our greatest need is for active fully functional responders (Firefighter / EMT). These positions also involve the greatest commitment of time for initial training, ongoing training, and response activities. You may at any time choose to participate in additional training programs to change your role in the department.

In exchange for volunteer time and effort, the department provides disability insurance and will pay all of the fees for active members wishing to participate in the Board of Volunteer Firefighters Pension Plan. The department also provides medical coverage for injuries or illnesses incurred as a result of your volunteer position. Career members receive wages and benefits as outlined in the union contract. Most importantly, as a member you have the opportunity to become a vital contributor within our community.

Department policy requires a good driving record in order to operate department vehicles. We are also required to perform a police background check. The applicant must pass a written, physical agility, and a medical evaluation by the doctor.

You have taken the first step in becoming a member of a well-respected organization and personal rewards that are unending.

Thank you again for your time and interest.
